The University of Iowa is seeking an Electrician II to join the Facilities Management Department. Under general supervision, this role performs all electrical maintenance and installation services required in his/her assigned area on equipment operating at BELOW distribution voltage levels. The Electrician II installs conduit, wire raceways, breaker panels, outlet devices lighting and associated controls. The person in this role will have to coordinate work with other trades and must understand and perform work that conforms to the standards set forth in the National Electric Code. The person in this role will use a wide variety of hand and power tools to accompl ish these tasks. Must be able to troubleshoot electrical problems and understand the use of diagnostic devices in performing such tasks.

Duties to Include:

  • Read and interpret drawings, job tickets and plan jobs accordingly and requisition the proper quantities of materials.
  • Troubleshoot inoperative equipment.
  • Install and repair lighting devices.
  • Install electric motors and motor control devices.
  • Install conduit and other types of wire
  • Pull electrical conductors and connect in proper order

About Facilities Management:

Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards of our beautiful Iowa City and Oakdale campus. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design & construction, and maintain & clean the buildings & grounds.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 08:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Hours per Week: 40

Location: University of Iowa campus

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  1. Requires State of Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician license with at least four years as an apprentice plus two years of experience as a journeyman electrician; or

    2. State of Iowa Class B Journeyman Electrician license with eight years in the electrical trade in maintenance or construction.

    3. Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet and maintain University of Iowa’s Fleet Safety Program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Prefer basic computer experience and experience with work order systems.
  • Experience in commercial automated control systems.
  • Experience with lighting controls.
  • An understanding of preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical control systems.
  • Ability to plan and perform work on new and existing control systems.
  • Ability to work in all types of environmental conditions.
