APPRENTICE POSITION SUMMARY: Trains to install heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and other equipment following manufacturer’s specifications and company requirements. Works under the supervision of a licensed Journeyman and is responsible for learning and assisting with the installation of equipment at designated new construction job sites in accordance with established standards, codes and procedures. Effectively uses hand and power tools, and operates within a defined scope of work. Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy when working with customers, contractors and co-workers. Meets all schooling and on-the-job training (OTJ) requirements of our Iowa state-registered apprenticeship program with the goal of becoming an Iowa state licensed Journeyman.


  1. Trains to install, maintain and repair HVAC systems during the construction process according to manufacturers’ specifications and code requirements
  2. Learns various aspects of residential new construction HVAC as well as working with copper, stainless duct material, PVC pipe, etc.
  3. Documents all installed equipment upon arrival – make, model, serial number, type of fuel, necessary test measurements, and pictures as necessary
  4. Transports various items (tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) to ensure the availability of materials required at job site as requested by manager/customer requirements
  5. Communicates with manager, Journeyman, dispatch, and coworkers regarding procedures and/or status of work orders; provides information for making decisions and takes appropriate action
  6. Follows written and verbal directions; works well independently or as a team member
  7. Complies with all safety rules and regulations
  8. Assists with maintaining vehicle, tools and equipment to ensure availability and safe operating conditions
  9. Trains to use hand and power tools effectively; acquires and maintains personal tools
  10. Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned to convey and/or gather information required to perform job functions
  11. Meets all attendance, schooling, and on-the-job training documentation requirements for apprentice program
  12. Prepares and updates written and computer software generated materials (repair status, activity logs, supply req, etc.) to document activities and/or convey information
  13. Maintains acceptable standards of personal grooming and presents a professional appearance
  14. Maintains acceptable driving record and valid Iowa drivers’ license to safeguard insurability with Company
  15. Enrolls and attends training to earn additional certifications and requirements
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective function of the work unit
