Design Project Specialist

The Design Project Specialist is responsible for the delivery of effective design project management services. The projects will have a high level of complexity and can be high profile and have a greater impact on the operations of the institution. Projects may be multi-phased with multiple contracts; project team may include staff from several disciplines and/or departments as well as specialty consultants.

Duties to Include:

  • Perform project design responsibilities as directed.
  • Responsible for the project’s design management process throughout entire project
  • Review contract documentation for compliance and recommend contract changes as needed.
  • Effectively communicate (both verbally and written) the project status with project team members and administration.
  • Manage the project budget, including but not limited to engineering/architecture and/or other vendor fees, and contingencies
  • Assure projects remain on schedule throughout course of design and/or construction.

Design & Construction takes an integrated and sustainable approach to the long-term planning and management of the University of Iowa’s land, buildings, and historic resources. We facilitate and support decision making processes of Senior Administration and the in these areas.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or a related field or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Professional experience (typically 1-3 years) in project management of projects during programming, schematic design, design development and/or construction document phases.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in computer software applications.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff at all levels of an organization.

Desired:

  • Experience in a customer focused, team-oriented environment.
  • Professional experience (typically 3 years) in project management of projects.
  • Working experience in project management of the design phases of projects on a university campus.
  • Working experience with project management software such as BlueBeam, Microsoft Projects, etc.
  • Working experience in sustainable design processes, laboratory and/or MEPT capital improvement projects and/or state building inspection procedures.
