Under general direction performs general service, diagnosis, maintenance, and repairs of heavy duty transit coaches and other vehicles/equipment in the City fleet.

II.SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Inspects fleet and equipment for safety defects and road worthiness. Inspects mechanical functions including the suspension, steering, brakes, lights, tires, alignments, hoses, exhaust systems etc. Inspects detective equipment and machinery and diagnosis malfunctions using motor analyzers, pressure gauges, chassis charts, factory manuals, etc., with whatever tools available.
  • Disassembles and overhauls engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, rear ends, etc., making necessary corrections and part replacements.  Maintains record keeping on service.
  • Tunes up engines; Replaces, fits, and adjusts, components; and replaces parts including carburetors, fuel injectors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks, and bearings.
  • Performs safety inspection as to operation of equipment and maintains equipment in a safe operational state as to the best of his/her ability.  
  • Performs preventative maintenance according to standards and specifications.
  • Makes arrangements with outside maintenance facilities to perform repair on equipment which is of such a major problem that he/she cannot fix it in the transit housed facilities, after consultation with the transit operations manager.
  • Diagnosis mechanical problems, electrical components, cooling components and chair lifts and determines the extent of necessary repairs.
  • Repairs, adjusts and rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
  • Raises vehicle using hydraulic jack or hoists to remove, rebuild, or replace units such as an engine, transmission, brake drums etc.
  • Wires, diagnosis, and reconditions electrical systems and computerized engine and transmission controls. Repairs and replaces such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, brakes, and suspension steering.
  • Relines brakes, replaces master cylinders, boosters, air brake components, and turns drums and rotors. Replaces, fits, and adjusts radiators, water pumps, and hoses.
  • Answers service calls and performs repair work in the field when necessary.
  • Cleans work area and shop. Repairs and maintains equipment used in repair of vehicles.
  • Prepares new vehicles for service and the older vehicles for removal.
  • Furnishes personal hand tools in performing job duties.
  • Attends trade courses, trainings, seminars etc. as required.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

III. EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by three (3) years of experience in mechanical work with specific knowledge of diesel engines preferred and helpful.
  • Valid State of Iowa Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and passenger endorsement required. This position is subject to Federal FTA and CDL testing requirements.

IV. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ability to read, speak, write, hear, and understand English to communicate effectively with fellow employees, contractors and the general public by telephone, two-way radio, written format and in person.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials and the public.
  • Ability to operate the department’s buses and other equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical labor activities as needed including using a variety of hand and power tools, repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds, stooping, bending and climbing (including using ladder).
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb and otherwise move about the job site for the performance of assigned duties.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace or citizens encountered during work.
  • Intellectual ability, judgement, stamina, and coordination necessary to normally complete daily assigned tasks within the workday.
  • Ability to operate computer, calculator, telephone and similar office machines. Must be skillful in working with computers with emphasis in the areas of Microsoft Applications including but not limited to, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of safety defects.
  • Knowledge of engines, electrical systems, computerized engine control and fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations.
  • Skills in the use of tools and repair equipment including engine, electrical, and diagnostic equipment, and precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose engine malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety manuals, diagrams, and technical information.
  • Ability to prepare written and computerized work orders, repair forms, and inventory data.
