Auto Mechanic - ELSC- Transportation

Job Information:

Principal Duties
Be responsible for the following:
Overhaul buses, trucks, automobiles, and other vehicles owned and/or operated by the District, including Sub-assemblies and accessories, including but not limited to the follow functions:

  • Engine tune up – gasoline/diesel 
  • Engine Replacement
  • Transmissions – manual/automatic
  • Cooling systems
  • Major engine overhaul
  • Exhaust systems
  • Electrical systems and schematics
  • Steering unites
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Hydraulic units
  • Emergency road service calls
  • Welding
  • Glass repair
  • Body repair
  • Snow removal
  • Seat repair
  • Tire maintenance – repair, mounting, and balancing
  • Serve as a substitute bus driver
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Category “E” of the salary schedule – Custodial and Maintenance
Essential Skills/Aptitudes/Requirements:
Must be able to pass the Physical Capacity Profile tests To perform this job successfully and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge; skill and/or ability required but are not all-inclusive.
  • Minimum of five (5) years broad truck and mechanic experience
  • Ability to do basic mathematic computations
  • Ability to understand instruction and technical manuals
  • Responsible attitude towards job and co-workers
  • Effective oral and written communications
  • Aptitude for detail
  • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions
  • Capable of representing the school District in a professional manner, which includes but is not limited to confidentiality, communication skills, and presenting a professional personal image
  • Ability to get along with others and work as a team player
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
  • Must furnish all of his/her typical auto mechanic small hand tools, the District will only furnish major large equipment such as jacks, welder, hoist, scopes, etc.
  • Hours of employment may vary depending on the needs of the District.
  • Must have or obtain a Commercial driver’s license, Type B with airbrake, passenger and school bus driver endorsements
  • Ability to pass D.O.T. physical and obtain medical certificate
  • A driving record satisfactory to the District and the District’s insurance carrier
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test

Physical Demands:
The job may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally. 
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, and push/pull or lift/move heavy objects (weighing up to 120 lbs.)

Working Environment:
Employee may work in areas where hearing and eye protection is recommended
The employee will be required at times to work outside during hot or cold weather, rain, snow sleet and icy conditions while performing their duties.
