IRB Education and Outreach Specialist
We are seeking a full-time Education & Outreach Specialist to join the staff of a thriving research compliance office in a BIG 10 institution of higher education. We offer a challenging and exciting work environment in which one has the opportunity to grow and learn about academic and biomedical human subjects research. Working in a team environment, the Education & Outreach Specialist with the University of Iowa’s Human Subjects Office (HSO) provides written and verbal educational resources to the UI research community and other administrative support for the Institutional Review Bo ard (IRB). We also provide support and guidance to faculty, staff and students engaged in human subjects research and related activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to

  • Coordinate scheduling and delivery of large and small group educational presentations and other educational activities
  • Assist with the creation and promotion of educational resources for UI researchers
  • Create written and verbal educational materials
  • Conduct monthly training sessions on the eResearch application system

The Human Subjects Office (HSO) was established by the Vice President for Research to provide administrative support for the University of Iowa Institutional Review Boards. An Institutional Review Board is a group of individuals charged with reviewing proposed research involving human subjects to ensure the protection of those subjects and compliance with federal human subjects regulations. The University of Iowa has three such review boards, each consisting of faculty, staff, and representatives from the Iowa City community.

Position Qualifications

Education or Equivalency Required

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience (typically 6 months - 1 year) conducting and/or monitoring research involving human participants, or in a related administrative role supporting human subject's research working with federal regulations.
  • Communicating for Effective Relationships: Demonstrates a working proficiency in ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborate manner, including strong writing, public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Accuracy and Attention to detail: Understands the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to process information with high levels of accuracy at a working level of proficiency.
  • Service Excellence/Customer Focus: Ability to meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service at a working level of proficiency.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience (typically one or more years) conducting and/or monitoring research involving human participants, or in a related administrative role supporting human subjects research.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of federal regulations regarding the protection of human subjects in research.
  • Technical experience with HawkIRB, data management system, or electronic workflow system.
  • Working experience reviewing, editing, or submitting IRB applications for compliance with federal regulations.
  • Certification as a Certified IRB Professional (CIP)
