The University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development seeks a self-motivated professional to serve as External IRB Coordinator in the Human Subjects Office. This position will provide administrative assistance and expertise for the human subject’s protection programs and services administered by the Human Subjects Office (HSO).  Assist with coordination of the activities and interactions among the external, noncommercial IRB(s), used by the University of Iowa, the UI Institutional Review Board, other committees, and UI investigators.

  • Complete a comprehensive review of all application submissions utilizing an external, noncommercial IRB(s), to ensure university requirements for application content and informed consent documents are met.
  • Review applications with non-University of Iowa research team members.
  • Serve as liaison to the public, faculty, the UI IRB, other University committees, and research staff concerning inquiries or complaints requiring interpretation of federal regulations and accreditation and IRB policies and procedures.
  • Perform preliminary review of completeness for all IRB application materials (including new projects, continuing reviews, modifications, and reportable event forms as assigned) utilizing an external, noncommercial IRB, to ensure university requirements for application content and informed consent documents are met.
  • Coordination and set up of IRB meetings in compliance with federal regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Make decisions and exercise a level of autonomy while typically performing administrative support for executives of an organization (e.g., Director, Assistant Director, Administrators, Supervisors, or IRB Chairs), including managing correspondence and schedules for special programs, webinars, or workshops
  • Maintain report processing for a variety of reports from the electronic research application system (HawkIRB).
  • Serve as technical expert on the use of the HawkIRB data management system and the external IRB application process including interaction with research investigators, staff, and others through phone, fax, letter, HawkIRB workflow, or in person.
