Senior Accountant - Shared Services

The University Shared Services Department is seeking two Senior Accountants to perform a broad range of accounting and financial analysis responsibilities to ensure effective and compliant organizational/department/unit operations. This position will be responsible for the supervision of financial activities in the University Shared Services department in addition to working with assigned departments to perform financial business activities in an environment of excellent customer service. The position will use accounting skills to perform financial support functions for the departments, provide departments with accurate and timely information to make decisions, and ensure efficient and effective transaction processing.

This position is eligible for remote work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually.

Duties to Include:

  • Review and approve expenditures to the appropriate fund and institutional accounts to ensure proper reporting on the University’s financial reports.
  • Serve as an expert resource for department staff, faculty, and Shared Services inquiries, ensuring policy compliance and appropriateness of expenses on departmental accounts.
  • Responsible to ensure monthly and year end transactions are processed within timelines and are accurately reported.
  • Responsible for reporting on Key Performance Indicators to monitor staff performance and transactional workloads to maintain timely processing.
  • Review both complex and routine transactions within University and departmental systems to ensure accurate funding and alignment with guidelines from Regents, University, and Department, maintaining 100% accuracy within a timely manner.
  • Interpret Regent and University policies as well as the IRS policies and use judgment to determine whether a transaction is allowable.
  • Provide system and policy training to faculty, staff, and students on a frequent basis and recommend and assist in developing training solutions.
  • Provide administrative supervision to University Shared services staff while creating an environment of support and customer service excellence.

Location: Remote

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm

Salary: $45,000 to commensurate

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience (typically 3 years) accounting experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Advanced skills in Excel).
  • Experience (typically 6 months) administrative supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of University polices/procedures
  • Knowledge of UI automated accounting systems.
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft Financials and E-Pro Systems.
  • Beyond 3 years’ accounting experience.
  • Experience analyzing data for fraudulent activity.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access.
