Finance Director / Controller

The YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility is seeking a Finance Director/Controller.  This position leads the internal operation of the Association's Finance Department which includes membership, program development, staff supervision, budgeting, and finance. This position reports directly to the President/CEO and serves as controller of the business operations and performs financial management for the Association.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and maintain business systems necessary to accurately meet the record keeping and reporting requirements of YMCA Management and Committees, applicable government entities and affiliated organizations.
  • Complete all procedures necessary to prepare and analyze Monthly Financial Statements for presentation to Executive Staff, the Finance Committee, Board of Directors, and other required entities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statistical reports as required by local, state and federal governments, United Way, YMCA of the USA, YMCA Retirement Fund, and other affiliates as required. 
  • Develop, supervise and direct budget training, format, criteria, and timelines of the annual budgeting process. Consolidate, complete and prepare final recommendations to administration, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.  Co-ordinate, consolidate and finalize budget to comply with United Way criteria.
  • Maintain all personnel records, association statistical reports, audit reports, tax returns, fixed asset system and records, service contracts, Insurance records, Accident/Incident reports and any other data pertinent to the business/financial aspects of the Association.
  • Analyze and negotiate annual insurance renewal contracts for the Association, monitoring claims and activity, for health, dental, life, disability, building and contents, general and umbrella liability, Directors & Officers liability, vehicle and other.  Seek competitive rates and recommend changes in coverage, providers and brokers as needed and apparent.  Submit all necessary reports in a timely manner.
  • Monitor investments for the Association and make recommendations to insure funds are invested to the best advantage of the Association.
  • Employ, train and supervise personnel in the Finance Department and provide training for other staff and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Supervise the annual audit and preparation of the IRS 990 tax return.  Prepare all necessary work papers, and provide other documentation needed to initiate the process and insure that it is completed in a timely manner. 
  • Develop and update criteria and prepare and analyze functional expenses of operating units.
  • Conduct periodic site audit review and prepare written reports on the reviews.  
  • Develop criteria and coordinate financial aspects of annual sustaining and capital campaigns.  Prepare reports as required.
  • Represent the Association and maintain positive relationships with other organizations in the community.
  • Perform all other tasks as assigned by the President/CEO.

Entry Requirements:

  • Technical knowledge of fund accounting as it applies to charitable, not-for-profit, community based organizations.
  • Technical knowledge of accounting systems, payroll systems, human resource systems, budget development and administration, financial reporting, record keeping requirements, taxes, insurance, and all other aspects of management as it pertains to business/financial operations.
  • Ability to delegate work, assign tasks, and develop procedures to insure that the Finance Department runs smoothly, efficiently and effectively.
  • Enjoy working and interacting with people of all types and ages, modeling and utilizing the important core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Minimum educational requirements are a BA degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration.  CPA designation preferred.
  • Knowledge of technology advances in business and financial management systems.
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting and finance experience.
