United Way of East Central Iowa

The Accountant is responsible for performing the fiscal functions of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. This includes maintaining and managing the control of accounts and financial records in areas such as disbursements, expenses, cash receipts, and payroll. This position administers pledge processing and is responsible for establishing and following financial policies, procedures and controls.

Execution of General Accounting Functions

  • Ensure accuracy and adherence to the Finance & Administration Department policy and procedure manual.
  • Manage social gambling process and ensure compliance with all laws.
  • Complete month end closeout entries for HSC and UWECI.
  • Send financial reports to managers monthly.
  • Prepare Human Services Campus (HSC) financial reports quarterly.
  • Regularly prepare compensation reports and grant reporting summaries.
  • Serve as back up for deposits of daily cash.
  • Reconcile and analyze key financial accounts monthly

Campaign Processing 

  • Assist in maintaining data integrity, including identifying and merging duplicate records, deleting obsolete records, and coordinating constituent status updates.
  • Use Andar database and other technology platforms for information, reporting, and follow up, and maintain accurate and current data in these platforms.
  • Administer annual campaign pledge processing and other campaign-related tasks.

Organizational Payroll

  • Process bi-weekly payroll, including related journal entries and payment of employee benefits.
  • Act as liaison with 3rd party payroll processor and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Effectively train and communicate with staff on all payroll matters.

Support CFO/VP, Finance & Administration

  • Reconcile endowment fund balances and prepare reports for various committees.
  • Provide support for the annual external audit, 990, time study process and budget process.

Other Skills

  • Accounting Software experience, preferably Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains.
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office

Education - Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience - 1-3 or 3-5 years

Maintain accuracy and confidentiality of records including but not limited to contact lists, membership rosters, database records, manuals and files, and other administrative documents.
