Iowa City Hospice is seeking a passionate, ethical, dynamic Director of Finance to lead the organization through day to day operations while overseeing and monitoring its financial affairs. This individual will have skills in strategic planning, accounting and annual budgeting. It requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration or related field and a minimum of seven years experience in accounting or finance, preferably in health care financial management or hospice care operations.


The Director of Finance is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. This position ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. The Director of Finance also oversees cost and general accounting, accounts receivable/collection, oversee payroll and risk management. This strategic position participates, leads and develops an internal team to support the following areas: finance, billing, business planning and budgeting.


Essential Job Functions (including but not limited to) :

  • Oversee all financial operations and direct corporate financial planning and structure.
  • Coordinate, analyze and report the financial performance to Management and Board of Directors (financial performance, projections and other special projects as required).
  • Prepare short and long-term financial forecasts of financial performance for use with internal management and external parties.
  • Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinate activities with outside audit firms and review firms performance.
  • Develop, implement and maintain accounting and administrative policies and procedures for a wide-ranging set of activities including financial accounting and reporting, and other corporate policies.
  • Proficiency in all aspects of non-profit accounting pertaining to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Responsible for financial and regulatory oversight of employee benefits, retirement plans, corporate insurance and related activities.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Oversee all billing activities to assure accurate and timely filing that result in maximum reimbursement.
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation, consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports. Advises management of actions and potential risks.
  • Hires, trains, develops and appraises staff effectively. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy. Consults with Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Oversees facility and grounds maintenance.
  • Oversees network and communications maintenance and stability.
  • Ensure effective use of resources.
  • Serve as an educational source to staff, care partners, and the Community.
  • Ensure implementation of strategic goals.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff and the organization.
  • Participate in Iowa City Hospice’s success by ensuring access to our exceptional care.
  • Support and promote Iowa City Hospice’s mission to lead in providing exceptional patient-centered end-of-life car and grief support to anyone affected by a terminal illness.
  • Participate in the organization’s quality assessment and performance improvement program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
