Director of Lab

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by providing administrative oversight for the Mercy Medical Center Laboratory and the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center Laboratory and by working with the Laboratories' Medical Directors to provide technical oversight. The Director, Laboratory Services works collaboratively with physicians, nursing, and other clinical personnel to provide high quality laboratory services supporting clinical care throughout the Leadership Job organization.

Job Specific Duties/Essential Functions

Ensure that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome

Ensures compliance with all regulatory standards, including CAP, CLIA, COLA, FDA, TJC, and OSHA

Works with Administration and other leadership to plan, organize, and direct laboratory operations

Works with Medical Director to plan, organize, and improve technical operations and testing

Initiates and actuates improved methods of service and directs their implementation

Prepare department operating and capital budgets

Meets operating budget and productivity targets

Provides oversight and direction for laboratory quality improvement activities

Develops and coaches direct reports

Communicates effectively with staff, peers, physicians, patients, and families, including written, verbal, and listening

Maintains and improves skills by participating in continuing education; promotes continuing education for direct reports

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including CAP, CLIA, COLA, FDA, TJC, and OSHA

Knowledge of performance improvement strategies

Knowledge of Lean principles

Ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations

Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written

Ability to develop and coach managers, supervisors, and other staff

Ability to manage budgets and meet financial targets

Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, and families in a professional and compassionate manner

Ability to hold staff accountable

Professional Experience

Required: At least 10 years in a clinical laboratory setting, with at least five years of supervisory experience.


Required: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory, biological, or chemical science

Preferred: Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or public administration

Licensure, Certification, Registration

Required: Certification as an MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP)
