Work-based Learning Program Specialist-VITAL

Workplace Learning Connection staff, at Kirkwood Community College, serve the K-12 education system of the Grant Wood Area Education Agency Area 10. This full time position will provide work based learning programming to students who have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and are currently enrolled in the VITAL program, a joint program between Kirkwood Community College and the Grant Wood Area Education Agency. The goal is to provide access to workplace readiness services that are included in the individualized plan. Additionally, a portion of this position will be dedicated to develop and provide work-based learning resources for eligible transition counselors and special education teachers to support their efforts in providing career exploration, career-interest alignment, and career planning to students in their home districts.


•Facilitation and delivery of work-based learning experiences that may include internships, job shadows, work site tours, career speakers, and mock interviews focusing on work-based learning experiences that integrate the business work setting and assist the student in exploring real jobs in the community. Candidate will utilize the Workplace Learning Connection database system to create and communicate these opportunities.

•Participation in discussions with representatives from community colleges (VITAL Team), businesses, high schools, economic development, pathway sector boards, Iowa Workforce Development (IWD), parents, and IVRS to discuss work-based learning experiences for students with disabilities, with a focus on developing and improving strategies for students with disabilities to increase independence and access to community, integrated employment. This may include providing instruction and disseminating information about effective employment practices.

•Collaborate with VITAL Special Education teachers to align WLC activities with the student's needs identified within each student's Individualized Education Plan.

•Develop working understanding of secondary special needs learners and supports in relation to the workplace.

•Providing career exploration support to identify work-based learning possibilities for students consistent with their areas of interest, including exploring business with potential career pathways and business sectors consistent with regional workforce demand areas.


• Bachelor's degree with five years of demonstrated successful, relevant experience in areas, such as career development, education, business and/or project management, program and resource development

•Knowledge of databases and computers

•A valid driver's license and the use of a personal vehicle.
